Third Grade Learning Opportunities in Your Home
Math: Practice facts and other math 10 minutes per night. IXL is a great way to do this! Students may need to finish daily assignments at home as well.
Spelling: Word lists will come home every Monday of a 5 day week. There will not be a test every Friday. Watch the planning sheet for this information.
Reading: Students are asked to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day. Document these minutes on the sheets provided. To make the 1000 Minute Club students will need to read approximately 30 minutes per day.
Writing: Keep track of story ideas at home. These can be jotted down on paper and then transferred into the journals for ideas to write about at later dates. Journals may also occasionally come home for assistance with revising and editing.
Please contact us with any questions or concerns. We are looking forward to helping your child grow as a learner this year.

Homework
Helping Your Child with Homework
Here are some steps you can take to encourage your child to take responsibility for his or her own homework assignments.
Remove distractions– have your child do his/her homework in a quiet place that does not have distractions. Turn off the TV and don't expect your child to do homework in a room where siblings are playing.
Establish a routine- Set a specific "homework time" such as right after supper or when your child first gets home. Require that homework be complete before your child can watch TV, use the phone, etc.
Guide, but don't correct- If your child needs help, offer ideas that can help her sort out the problem, but don't give her the answers.
Prioritize - Help your child plan his studying so that projects are not left until the last minute. Keep the homework folder in a prominent and safe place so that homework assignments are clear.
Check understanding- Be sure your child understands new assignments before he or she starts working on them. This one can save lots of late-evening tears!
Get organized for tomorrow- Remind your child to pack the backpack before going to bed. Even the best homework effort doesn't do much good if it's left on the kitchen table!
